Yale University announcing over the weekend that it will change the name of its Calhoun College, bowing to the demands of protesters who said the namesake was tied to slavery.
John
C. Calhoun graduated from Yale in 1804 and served as U.S. Vice President under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. But he was also an ardent advocate for slavery and white supremacy.
In
a statement, Yale's president said:
"Calhoun's
legacy as a white supremacist and a national leader who passionately promoted slavery as a 'positive good' fundamentally conflicts with Yale's mission and values."
The
name has been in place for 86 years, but after years of debate and protests, the university finally gave in. Protests escalated over the summer when a dining hall employee destroyed a window depicting slaves in a cotton field.
It
also reverses a decision made last April when Yale said it would keep the name to encourage the campus to confront the history of slavery.
Yale
will rename the residential college for Grace Murray Hopper, a 1934 alumni who was a brilliant mathematician, making pivotal advances in computer science. She also served as a rear admiral in the United States Navy.
Yale
is one of several U.S. universities facing pressure to rename and remove symbols associated with racism.
